In 2008, the state of Michigan enacted a tax incentive program in hopes of luring movie studios and production companies into filming their movies in Michigan. This program hoped to bring a much-needed boost to the Michigan economy by creating more work in the state, including generating more business for hotels, caterers, and actors alike.
Thanks to these incentives, Michigan has welcomed some major star power the last three years.
Golden Globe Nominated drama Gran Torino was filmed in Detroit in 2008, as was George Clooney’s Up in the Air. Miss Miley Cyrus even graced the wolverine state with her presence last summer to film LOL, alongside castmates Ashley Greene and Demi Moore. Highly anticipated drama This Must Be The Place featuring Sean Penn as a retired rock star also shot in Detroit.
But what about Ann Arbor? Along with Detroit, Ann Arbor has also been a popular shooting destination for many movies filming in Michigan. In the fall of 2009, David Schwimmer directed the drama Trust filmed on campus featuring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener.
The biggest perk of these movies shooting so close to Ann Arbor? UM students get to be extras! Most recently, The Ides of March filmed in Ann Arbor in March 2011, and hundreds of UM students were featured as extras in the film, shooting alongside the likes of George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, and Evan Rachel Wood.
As classes were winding down this April, production was heating up for Five Year Engagement starring Emily Blunt and Jason Segel. Emily Blunt, hubby John Krasinski, and Jason Segel were spotted at local eateries Cafe Felix, Grizzly Peak, and Bar Louie. Filming for Five Year Engagement will continue into June, so if you’re still on campus, send “The Entertainment Buzz” a tweet if you spot any of the cast or crew!
Be sure to keep an eye out for your UM classmates and favorite campus hotspots when these movies hit theaters next year.

To some, summer may mean long, beach-ready locks, but some of our favorite celebs are stepping out this summer with their shortest hair yet.
Back in February, Jennifer Aniston turned heads on the red carpet at the Just Go With It premiere with a trendy, longer bob. Aniston’s hair is known to set trends (i.e. “The Rachel” made famous on the sitcom “Friends”), so we imagine a fan or two (or more) will soon be shortening their locks, as well.
One of Aniston’s Just Go With It costars, supermodel Brooklyn Decker, took her twitter followers along with she sliced her envy-inducing, blonde waves just below her chin, cutting off a whopping 10 inches! Decker adored her new ‘do, tweeting “Chopped my hair OFF today!! Thank you!! I love!!”, uploading before and after pics to her twitter.
We can all agree that risky haircuts take getting used to, but these three Hollywood beauties show that if you wear it with confidence, you are sure to wear it well.
