The Central Student Government elections continued into their thirteenth day today, with the Presidential and Vice Presidential election results still uncertified. The University Elections Commission held a hearing on Monday night, during which they voted to remand an appeal of a hearing against President-elect Manish Parikh. Parikh and his vice president, Omar Hashwi, won the student vote during the March 21-22 elections, but the results remain unconfirmed due to multiple hearings and deliberations.

The University Election Commission and Central Student Judiciary continue to meet regarding claims of alleged campaign violations. It is unclear when the election results will be confirmed, however, CSG Election Director Peter Borock told WOLV-TV that they hope to certify the executive slate within the next week. He added that it is “vitally important to make sure that every party has a chance to be fully heard on all claims.”

This historic election may encourage representatives to reform election rules in order to avoid delays in the future. President-elect Manish Parikh told WOLV-TV that in order to ensure that future elections are certified more quickly, “CSG is currently deliberating on completely striking and modifying the election code in its entirety.”

Parikh also noted that “No matter who you voted for, no matter whether you voted at all, no matter what your major is or why you are at this University, as long as you have an M Card in your pocket, your Student Government loves you all equally, and will fight for you, will treat you as their only boss, and will ultimately return this Student Government back to the students.”

For more information on the Central Student Government, visit https://csg.umich.edu/.

In less than two weeks, students throughout University of Michigan will submit an online ballot to determine who will represent the leaders and best as the President of the Central Student Government next year. Each year, the candidates campaign. They debate. They work to make their platform known, so that students can make an informed vote. Yet, some students report that they feel uninformed about who exactly the candidates are. Many either vote for their friends, or choose to support a party that generally aligns with their views. We at WOLV-TV want to fight that stigma; we want all students to log on to the election website on March 21st with a clear idea of exactly who they want to see lead us in the 2012-2013 school year. We want you to make an informed decision.

On Friday, March 16th, Wake Up with WOLV will be airing their first-ever “Meet the Candidates” special. All of the CSG Presidential candidates are invited to present their platform live as our anchors, Lauren Blanchard and Hadas Brown, relay the questions that you want to ask. These interviews will allow you to see the candidates in a candid format, and hear what they plan to do if elected.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Send us your questions at wolv.wuww@umich.edu. We will ask the candidates as many questions as we can, so that students can get all the information they need to feel confident in their vote. Be sure to tune in to channel 55 in the residence halls Friday at 11 AM, and if you do not have access to a dorm television at that time, you can also watch it online once it is posted on our website.

For all updates related to the election special and Wake Up with WOLV in general, follow us on twitter: @wolvtv_wuww.

The ongoing case of the child pornography-found on a thumb drive in a lounge of the Pediatric Emergency Department of the University of Michigan hospital-has now received federal charges, and went through the Board of Regents on Thursday, February 16th. Former medical resident Stephen Jenson has been charged with the possession of the files, found last May but not reported until this December.

According to The Detroit Free Press online, the Board of Regents ruled to allow the University to launch an external investigation, taking away control of the case from President Mary Sue Coleman and her administration. Originally found and reported in May, investigation was not brought back to light until November-six months later-when, after the alleged child abuse at Penn State University, investigation of the case was reopened.

Jenson was released from court on Thursday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Whalen on several conditions including not contacting minors or victims, not using the computer to search for employment, and not leaving Eastern Michigan except for a trip to Utah to settle his recently deceased father’s estate.

Jenson has previously been charged with four counts of possession of child pornography, and is scheduled to reappear in court on March 8.

It may not feel like feel like it outside, but flu season is upon us, and everyone is as determined as ever to avoid this influenza bout. One study, called eX-FLU, is determined to, according to their Objective, “investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of using non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent the transmission of influenza in residence hall units at the University of Michigan.” The eX-FLU team has found that many influenza breakout cases occur amongst younger persons living in close vicinity—which of course makes the dorms a prime flu location.

eX-FLU is looking for participants who will be a part of a control group, a group that will be confined to their rooms for three days, or another group confined for six days. Each of these groups will provide specimen and data to be tested for virus identification, and they will be paid if they display signs of the flu—coughing, fever, chills, body aches. The study team is providing, “$10 for specimens provided within 24 hours of reporting illness, $15 for specimens provided on day three of illness and $20 for specimens provided on day six of illness,” amongst other participant benefits and payments.
